A State of Opportunity
North Carolina is consistently ranked as one of the top places for business, residence and travel in the United States. A prime attraction for real estate, North Carolina's geography alone draws countless visitors and new residents to the area year after year, with its picturesque beaches to the east(on the Inner and Outer Banks) all the way to its Appalachian Mountains to the west. Even more are flocking to the state, as North Carolina continues to grow economically as one of the top business climates in the U.S.
The Triangle
The Triangle region, which includes Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill, significantly climbs economic rankings each year. Most notably, in 2008 Forbes ranked Raleigh, NC, among the Top 10 Recession-Proof Cities in America. Forbes also published the Best Places for Business and Career in March 2008, with Raleigh claiming the #1 spot for the second straight year. Raleigh was also cited as a city to anticipate significant growth, with an expected 7.4% growth rate in professional and business services and 6% in education and health.
Much of Raleigh's success can be attributed to the highly-competitive Research Triangle Park area, home to IBM, Cisco Systems, GlaxoSmithKline, Lilly, Sony Ericcson, among other large research corporations. Progress Energy is a major Fortune 250 company based in Raleigh. Additionally, the Triangle is home to a great part of the country's best public and private universities and research and medical institutions, including Duke University, North Carolina State University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina Central University.
