American Cancer Society's Annual Golf Classic Raises over $100,000

Event raises funds and awareness in the fight against cancer

RALEIGH, NC – June 1, 2009 – The 2009 Swing Fore A Cure Golf Classic was held on April 27th at Raleigh Country Club. Swing Fore A Cure is the premier golf event in the Triangle, bringing together business and community leaders to raise funds for the American Cancer Society.  This year’s event raised over $100,000, which will support the American Cancer Society's goal to prevent cancer, save lives, and diminish suffering from cancer.

The American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org) is a nationwide health organization committed to eliminating cancer as a major health problem through education, research, advocacy, and services.  According to the ACS website, over 40,000 new cancer cases are estimated to have occurred in North Carolina in 2008 and over 16,000 deaths resulting from this disease.  The ACS also states that more than 1,500 people are expected to die each day from cancer.  The good news is that the five-year relative survival rate for all cancers diagnosed between 1995 and 2001 is 65% – up from 50% in 1974-1976.

Serving on the 2009 Triangle Swing For A Cure Executive Committee were George Richards (Richards Commercial), Amy Watkins (Richards Commercial), Reid Fogleman (Maxwell 3), Shane Bull (Richards Commercial), Rich Lee (Hosted Solutions), Mike Smith (Kane Realty), Tadd Hall (American Cancer Society), Steve Jones (RBC Bank), Smokey Norris (US Foodservice), Dean Ogan (Rocky Top Hospitality), Allison Sheehan and Kathleen Hofstadter (Red Sword Guild), Bill Cowher (CBS Sports NFL Today), and Henry Warren (Carolina Holdings).

Sponsoring this year’s golf event were Genworth Finance, Baker Roofing, Duke Realty Corporation, Hosted Solutions, Kane Realty Corporation, Manning Fulton, Maxwell 3, RBC Bank, The Red Sword Guild, Richards Commercial Properties, Rocky Top Hospitality, US Foodservice, Watson Electrical, Welsh Paper Company, and Thomas, Judy, and Tucker, P.A.

From our initial meeting, Shane has always been straightforward with me and very dedicated to my project.  When I had questions for him, he always answered them honestly, which I really admire.  The knowledge, dedication, and support he has given me have been amazing.  We worked extremely well together trying to get Mirage ready for opening, and I feel very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to work with him.  Shane is truly a great guy.
