American Cancer Society’s Annual Golf Classic Raises over $90,000
Event raises funds for research to help find a cure for cancer RALEIGH, NC – MAY 1, 2008 – The American Cancer Society’s 12th Annual Fred Fletcher Memorial Golf Classic was held on April 28 at Raleigh Country Club. This year’s event raised over $90,000, which will benefit the American Cancer Society’s South Atlantic Division’s flight against cancer. The American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org) is a nationwide health organization committed to eliminating cancer as a major health problem through education, research, advocacy, and services. According to the ACS website, over 40,000 new cancer cases are estimated to occur in North Carolina in 2008 and over 16,000 deaths resulting from this disease. The ACS also states that more than 1,500 people are expected to die each day from cancer. The good news is that the five-year relative survival rate for all cancers diagnosed between 1995 and 2001 is 65% – up from 50% in 1974-1976. This year’s Golf Classic Finance Chair was Shane Bull of Richards Commercial Properties. Like so many other volunteers and contributors, Bull says that his reason behind his involvement and commitment to ACS is personal. “After a 10-year battle with breast cancer, my Grandmother passed away a few years ago, and my mother-in-law went through radiation treatment for breast cancer just five years ago,” says Bull. “Volunteering and serving on this year’s golf tournament committee is just one way of showing my gratitude to the American Cancer Society for their dedication and diligence in pursuing a cure for this disease.” Serving with Bull on the 2008 ACS Golf Classic Committee were Smokey Norris (U.S. Foodservice), George Richards (Richards Commercial Properties), Amy Watkins (Richards Commercial Properties), Shawn Wiseman (Richards Commercial Properties), Aimee Bridges (Rocky Top Hospitality), Trent Atkins (Thomas, Judy, & Tucker, PA), Steve Fitzhenry (NWN Corporation), Judy Richards, Dean Ogan (Rocky Top Hospitality), Liz Wallace (Rocky Top Hospitality), and Tadd Hall (American Cancer Society). “I’m so proud of all of our 2008 tournament volunteers,” adds Bull. “It was a lot of hard work and truly a team effort to be able to raise over $90,000 for this amazing cause.
